smokey winged eyeliner hack technique
If drawing winged eyeliner is a burden for you, this simple trick will change everything.
What You’ll Need
- Low-tack tape (regular tape works, but remove some stickiness first)
- Cotton swabs
- Matte eyeshadow (black + brown work great)
- Micellar water + cotton pad (for cleanup)
- Optional: liquid liner, mascara, eyelash curler
Step 1: Prep the Tape (This Matters!)
Before placing tape near your eye, press it onto the back of your hand 1–2 times to reduce stickiness. You want it to hold gently—not pull your skin.
Step 2: Place the Tape for the Perfect Wing Angle
Align the tape with your lower lash line, as if that line continues upward past the outer corner of your eye. A helpful guide: imagine a straight line from your pupil toward the outer edge—this is roughly where the wing should end.
If it doesn’t look right the first time, simply lift and reposition. Don’t worry if it slightly disturbs your base makeup—this is fixable later.

Step 3: Create the Smoky Wing Using a Cotton Swab
Dip a cotton swab into a small amount of matte eyeshadow (start with black or deep brown). Tap off excess. Then:
- Start at the top edge of the tape and blend downward toward the lash line.
- Keep the highest point of your shadow around the area above the pupil—don’t lift it too high.
- Use a very light touch. Build slowly.
Flip the cotton swab to the clean side and gently soften the top edge of the shadow. This gives that “smoky but clean” finish.
Optional: Make It More Flattering With Brown (Especially for Mature Eyes)
If you love a softer look, add a brown matte shadow to blend the black into a warm smoky gradient. Keep the inner corner lighter and smaller, while the outer corner (near the tape) stays deeper and wider.
Step 4: Peel the Tape & Reveal the Wing
Slowly remove the tape. You’ll instantly see a wing that’s sharp underneath and softly blended on top—the best of both worlds.
Quick Fix: How to Clean Fallout Without Ruining Your Base
If eyeshadow falls under your eye, don’t panic. Use a cotton pad with a small amount of micellar water and gently wipe in small circular motions to avoid spreading it.
Then, apply a tiny bit of foundation with a small brush for controlled coverage, and press lightly with a sponge to blend it back into your base.
Optional Finishing Touches (For a More Defined Eye)
- Tightline the upper lash line with a thin liquid liner to add depth without taking lid space.
- Curl your lashes for a lifted effect (especially helpful if your lashes point downward).
- Apply mascara on upper lashes only for a clean daytime look—or add lower mascara for extra drama.
Final Thoughts
This is one of the easiest ways to get a smoky winged eyeliner that looks polished, flattering, and wearable. It’s also perfect for travel days when you don’t want to pack brushes. Try it once, and you’ll be surprised how fast it becomes your go-to method.
Which version do you prefer? Just mascara, soft brown smoky, or full glam with lower liner? Tell me in the comments.
